Mechanical Engineering Image Collection

You can now view over 1700 photographs, paintings and drawings from the archives and historic book collection of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.  Images span the history of mechanical engineering from the 1800’s to the late 1900’s, and are are copyright cleared for non-commercial use in learning, teaching and research.

This collection of visual material can be viewed through the online Visual Arts Data Service (VADS) and contains thousands of interesting items such as an early 18th Century fire engine, photographs of daring land speed record breaking vehicles in the 1930s, an early experimental petrol car from 1901 and much, much more.

Browse the collection for images of aircraft, cars, railways, ships, bridges, machinery and material from many other engineering topics. Here are a few examples of images you can find:
