Book of the Week: Laika

Laika Nick Abadzis has crafted a charming graphic novel about our planet’s first space adventurer, the Russian puppy Laika, who was launched into orbit in Sputnik 2. The book can be found on Library Level 3 at 741.5 ABA

Mixing fact and fiction with the fascinating background of the heating-up space race in the 1950s, makes this quiet an engaging tale. Spolier alert! Given the current trend to volunteer for a one-way ticket to Mars, perhaps this story of one animal’s one-way ticket into space is more relevant than ever!  Expect a poignant ending. Thematically it touches on a lot of issues of power, ambition and sacrifice – all balanced well in what is a fairly slender volume and without getting mawkish.
